Our Programs & Classes
Students and enthusiasts of Karate have many reasons for their interest in this and other martial art styles. Some are drawn to the physical fitness and weight-loss aspects of training. Others seek to add discipline and self control to their lives. While still others are concerned about safety and self-defense.
Whether you are interested in our programs for mental or physical well being, Maryland Shido-Kan Shorin Ryu Karate offers a number of programs that will fit your developmental needs and your busy schedule as well.
Kids Karate has tremendous benefits. We have classes for ages 3 and up! Our class focuses not only on developing karate but encouraging physical fitness and character development. these days it is VERY important that kids stay active and fit, and Karate is a great year round option. In addition to physical fitness our program develops Self confidence- a natural bully deterrent. We make sure to instill self discipline, foster respect and perseverance in a fun and family friendly environment.
Our kids class also does community service projects and fun outings together to encourage friendship and community!
At our school we have fitness classes specifically intended to maximize results while keeping the workout time under an hour. We use a combination of calisthenics, plyiometrics, and equipment such as kettle bells and medicine balls. Our goal is to develop core strength, increase energy, and create lasting fitness and results in our students. Just look at our testimonials page and see for yourself!
ADULT/ TEEN KARATE
At the Maryland Shido-kan dojo, karate is taught as a traditional martial art rather than as a competitive sport, so emphasis is placed on kata, the "heart of the art". Kata, or forms, are specific patterns of movement which combine various techniques of defense and offense in a rhythmic sequence. They are the foundation from which the student develops concentration, power, speed, balance and control.
Perfecting the execution of each kata entails not only learning the correct movements of the form, but also in developing ever deeper insights into the practical applications of each movement of the kata. To assist in that understanding as the student progresses, we teach various bunkei (practical applications) associated the katas.
Another training method is prearranged sparring (kumite) which enhances timing, reflexes and throwing skills. The striking board (makiwara) and kicking/punching bag are also utilized to condition and strengthen the body.
Our classes are taught in an environment in which the student may acquire confidence and physical expertise, while having fun. In addition to developing self-defense skills, dedicated practice of karate inevitably leads to a strengthening of the body and an increase of flexibility and vitality. The goal of karate and of this school, however, is not just the cultivation and delivery of power. Anyone can develop and train his or her body, rather the goal is to learn to channel and control that power and to use it effectively, efficiently, and with good judgment.
That is the true art of Karate.

Homeschool Karate and Fitness
Held once a week we help develop kids fitness, balance and body awareness in our Homeschool Karate and Fitness class. A fun way to fill the Maryland PE requirement!!
